Chia Seeds

As denizens of the 60’s we remember caged birds on display for sale in department stores such as Sears and Montgomery Wards (Monkey Wards).

We owned a couple of birds so we know what bird seed looks like, feels like, and yes…tastes like.

Ceramic and silly Chia pets showed up on the scene around the early 1980’s. If you don’t know what is a Chia Pet, it’s a ceramic statue that gets coated with a mixture of chia seed and some sort of patented glop smeared onto the terracotta statue.
Add water and a few weeks later sprouts arise to give the figurine green ‘hair’.
Chia pets are nearly as fascinating as singing fish clocks.

Now we’re in the millennium and discover chia seeds aren’t just for parakeets anymore. Seems Chia is food for people and vegans aka space aliens.

There was an hysterical transition period but myshadow has accepted that I will add Chia seed to deligious entrees for our consumption. Some things Chaos has come to accept.

The problem arises when Chaos heard a TV News-jay spew a report about chia pets. Someone asked the TJ whether one could eat the chia seed that comes with the Chia pets.

Chaos saw a definate moment of confusion, bewilderment in the face of the T-Jays shadow.

Chaos recognized the ultimate farce in the T-Jay’s shadow as it uttered ‘the only chia seed safe to eat is sold in grocery stores.’

So, before you run screaming to the grocery store to buy your safe-to-eat chia seeds, know this:

Chia seeds originated in Mexico and have been a staple food by the Aztecs in Central Mexico since the pre-Columbian times.

Historically chia was the third most important crop to the Aztecs, followed by maize and beans.

Chia plants look amazingly like mint plants – only 5 1/2 feet tall and grow in a wide range of climates.

The good news: You may grow your own.
