Allow us to Explain

I think of the triangle as

  • me,
  • myself
  • and I

Existence sits on on one shoulder,

Relatedness sits on the other shoulder

Growth stands on top to monitor both.

It’s my own personal version of Alderfer’s Theory of Motivation which helps me sort my thoughts and resolve conflict, young and old.

By utilizing characters I can better visualize what goes through my mind as I battle the noise that is life.

Pretty slick, huh?

Some might call them devils and angels, good imps or bad imps. I prefer Chaos vs Control.

Existence = survival.  My little red-headed girl provides unwanted advice…excessively so.

  • Don’t eat this,
  • don’t go there,
  • don’t think that.

In fact, all she can say is “no.”  Such a buzz-kill, but she keeps me alive and healthy…ish.

I’ve named her Control.

Relate = Social.  This beast provides advice – good, bad and ugly…excessively so.  All she can say is “yes”. I’ve named her Chaos as there is nothing she won’t consider doing, buying, eating, thinking…saying, the sky’s the limit.  She can get us into such trouble.

Growth = Growth. Can’t get any better than that. Growth is my infant. My child in constant learning mode. The child who asks the hard questions adults forget to ask themselves when they wrestle with unwelcome thoughts, actions or memories:

  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Why
  • How

Growth is a photo of me at the ripe old age of one year.  I didn’t regularly listen to Growth for many years until one day I realized how external influences conspire to force Control and Chaos to compete for attention to the detriment of the body part of “we” that houses this three-ring circus.

News media, politicians, advertisers and marketers all target Chaos in the hopes Growth gets lost in the 2-way antagonistic battles between survival and relatedness.

Both Control and Chaos connive and manipulate using guilt and fear to persuade Growth to make detrimental, instant, impulsive 2-way decisions.

  • Buy this and you will live, be happy, desirable et al.
  • Buy that or you will die, be miserable, unhappy, undesirable

The end result is high debit, over eating and dependence upon “expert” advice for decision making when we should be using our own capacity to think critically about situations as they arise.

Just So You Know, our passions are:

  • Art, painting, crafting, sculpting and illustrating,
  • Research and Public speaking at my Toastmasters Club
  • Writing humorous* stuff

This triad of interests form distinct personalities upon performance of one of the above or the other. At this time we’re* in process of developing the ultimate comedy weapon. We keep our trio of nuts quite busy.

* Asterisk No 1 – by “Humorous,” we mean what is funny to us not particularly the reader.

* Asterisk No 2 – By “We” refer to the graphic below and make your own determination.

About Post Author

The Theory of Pat is a gradual process which will expand as we work out the mysteries of our past, present and future. We chose to share as we learn and practice how to navigate our own impulsive and irrational thoughts so we may help others better defend against those who work to exploit weakness.
